Chapter Nineteen

EVE KNOCKED ON MY DOOR when it was my usual time to leave in the morning. I opened it and let her in. “I spoke to Barry and told him I’m going to Lakeview with you,” she said, nose wrinkling at my cramped home. “He wasn’t happy about not going with us, but he said I could go.”

“He wasn’t happy because he won’t get a chance to hit on you all day,” I said dryly.

“That man is a disgrace,” Fran declared, chins quivering in disgust. “Eve isn’t the only female he’s harassing. He’s also hit on the parcel delivery girl and the girl who works at the gas station.”

“And the librarian,” Maryanne added. “She’s twenty years older than him, but he doesn’t discriminate.”

“His wife is eight months pregnant and wants nothing to do with him,” Reginald said with a titter. “He’s desperate for sex.”

“That’s no excuse for cheating,” Jess said with a frown. “Men are pathetic.”

“What did I miss?” Eve asked when I snickered and she realized she’d missed an entire conversation.

“I’ll tell you in the car,” I replied, snagging my purse from the coffee table. “Someone clean the cottage while I’m gone, will you?” I said to the ghosts, then laughed at their annoyed looks. I locked the door, checked that Satan wasn’t lurking nearby, then hurried over to my car.

Eve snorted out a laugh when I filled her in on what the ghosts had to say about her boss as I drove off. “I always knew Barry was a weasel,” she said. “It doesn’t surprise me that he’s trying to get it anywhere he can.”

“Is there a spell you can cast to make him stop hitting on you?”

“Yeah, but you know our policy about using magic against normals. It’s forbidden.”

“Surely, the Council of Conjurers wouldn’t punish you for making your boss leave you alone.”

“Altering normals’ minds is against the rules,” she explained. “But I’ll have to do something soon if he keeps this up. It’s getting annoying.”

Lakeview was the next town past Verity Falls and it took us nearly an hour to get there. I only had one client booked in today and she wasn’t due to arrive at my office until this afternoon. We had several hours to spare, which was good since Eve needed to check out four different properties.

My client lived in a big house that had seen better days. Some of the windows were cracked and it was in desperate need of paint. Three stories tall, it had arched windows and a cupola with a sharply peaked roof on the right side. It had probably been magnificent once, but it was now just tired and worn.

“Creepy,” Eve pronounced as she peered through the window at it.

“What would something like that go for?” I asked curiously as we climbed out.

“About a hundred and fifty,” she replied.

“Grand?”

“Bucks,” she corrected me with a grin and we both snickered. “I’d have to do some comps in the area before I could come up with a figure.”

“What are comps?”

“Comparisons of properties that are similar to this,” she explained.
